Programme:
Introduce participants to the various types of veneer available and talk about both sawn and sliced,
together with the benefits/disadvantages of each. Sliced veneer – is it better rift or quarter sawn?
Selection:
• How to select a pack and the best way to buy
• Marking each sheet of veneer
• Flattening “cranky” veneer
• Using mirrors to see pattens
• Skip or book match
Tools:
• What tools do you need to get the best results?
• How to select and fine tune them
• Practice how to use them.
Techniques:
• Shooting the edges of veneers – planing or sanding
• How to cut stringing
• How to tape veneer – the use of masking tape and the benefits of paper veneer tape
Substrate:
• Which substrate should you use and when: Plywood, Chipboard, MDF, Bendy ply, etc.?
• How to fit solid edges for doors and tops, etc.
Glue-up:
• Different types of glues available
• Which ones give consistent results
• Which to use – Vacuum bag or cauls
Things you will need to bring:
• 300mm Steel Rule
• A plastic drafting square (if you have one)
• A cutting knife with snap off blades
• A sharp pencil
Participants will spend the afternoon putting to use all the topics discussed during the morning
session to select and fit veneers and stringing to produce and finish a Box Top suitable to include in
their next project.
Morning and afternoon tea will be provided, but please bring your own lunch.
